What a PSAT total means on the SAT
Because the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT share one score scale, your PSAT total is also your same-day SAT equivalent. This table shows where that number would sit among SAT takers and what it matches on the ACT.
| PSAT total (same-day SAT) | SAT user percentile | Nationally representative percentile | ACT match |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 | 1- | 1- | Below table |
| 450 | 1- | 1- | Below table |
| 500 | 1st | 1- | Below table |
| 550 | 1st | 1- | Below table |
| 600 | 2nd | 1- | 9 |
| 650 | 3rd | 1st | 11 |
| 700 | 6th | 4th | 12 |
| 750 | 11th | 8th | 13 |
| 800 | 17th | 14th | 14 |
| 850 | 24th | 21st | 15 |
| 900 | 32nd | 29th | 16 |
| 950 | 39th | 38th | 17 |

| 1100 | 62nd | 67th | 22 |
| 1150 | 69th | 74th | 23 |
| 1200 | 75th | 81st | 25 |
| 1250 | 80th | 86th | 26 |
| 1300 | 85th | 91st | 28 |
| 1350 | 89th | 94th | 29 |
| 1400 | 93rd | 97th | 31 |
| 1450 | 95th | 99th | 33 |
| 1500 | 97th | 99th | 34 |
| 1520 | 98th | 99+ | 34 |
The PSAT/NMSQT total starts at 320, but the SAT total starts at 400, so the table begins at 400. PSAT totals between 1530 and 1600 don't exist, because the PSAT tops out at 1520.
How it works
- Enter your PSAT/NMSQT Reading and Writing and Math scores from your score report.
- College Board puts the whole SAT Suite on a common score scale, so each section score carries straight over as a same-day SAT equivalent (College Board).
- The two sections are added for the SAT total, and the total is looked up in College Board's SAT user percentile table.
- Your National Merit Selection Index is 2 times Reading and Writing, plus Math, divided by 10 (College Board). Semifinalist cutoffs use this index, and 1.27% of 2024 entrants reached Semifinalist.
Worked example. Reading and Writing 620 and Math 600 give a same-day SAT equivalent of 1220, which is the 77th SAT user percentile. The Selection Index is 2 × 620 = 1240, plus 600 = 1840, divided by 10 = 184.
Things to know
- A same-day equivalent is not a forecast. Many converters add a fixed "growth" bump, but there's no published method for that, so this tool doesn't add one. How much your SAT moves depends on your prep and how much time passes.
- The PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 1520 (sections 160 to 760), while the SAT tops out at 1600 (sections 200 to 800) (College Board).
- The percentile shown is an SAT-taker percentile, not your PSAT percentile. Your PSAT score report has its own percentiles.
Questions people ask
What does a 1300 on the PSAT equal on the SAT?
About 1300. The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT use a common score scale, so a 1300 PSAT is the SAT score you'd be expected to earn if you took the SAT the same day (College Board). A 1300 sits at the 85th SAT user percentile.
Why is the PSAT maximum 1520 and not 1600?
The PSAT/NMSQT is built for an earlier stage of high school, so its scale stops lower. Each PSAT section runs from 160 to 760 and the total from 320 to 1520, while SAT sections run from 200 to 800 (College Board).
How is the National Merit Selection Index calculated?
Double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score, and divide by 10. The index runs from 48 to 228 (College Board). Our National Merit calculator compares it with state cutoffs.
Will my SAT score be higher than my PSAT score?
Nobody can tell you that in advance. The same-day equivalent shows where you stand today, and what changes it is how much you practice and how much time passes before you take the SAT.

The PSAT to SAT conversion calculator on TutoringForSat.com was built by Cedrick Reese. It relies on College Board's PSAT/NMSQT Understanding Scores guide for the shared score scale, the section ranges and the Selection Index formula, and on College Board's SAT user percentile table, which was compared row by row against the source on October 7, 2026. No growth factor is applied because no official one exists. A PSAT practice-test scoring mode will be added only after College Board's PSAT/NMSQT practice tables are transcribed and checked.
